Anecdote

On the day of the Morehead City field trip, my group stooped at a local Chick-Fil-A for lunch.

We pretty much inhaled our wonderfully healthy fried chicken and (semi-)greasy fries.

Christen Rogers and I were debating over what to get for dessert. It was very hard to make the selection when there was only an option of ice cream or a milkshake. :D

Suddenly, Christen screams, "MILKSHAKE!". I'm taken completely aback by this because it was SO sudden.

Christen ordered her milkshake, spelled out her name for the cashier (Christen, if you were wondering), and paid.

A few minutes later, the cashier has Christen's milkshake. She's frantically saying, "Christine? Christine?" with no reply.

Meanwhile, Mrs. Rogers is going like, "*cough* CHRISTEN! *cough*"

The cashier finally got Christen her milkshake, and she says it was yummy. :D

Funny Picture

(Yes, I know I'm a nerd.)

The image obviously says "There's no place like 127.0.0.1."

127.0.0.1 represents an IP address. Every computer on the internet has its own IP address. The IP of the computer shows the location that the router is at to the Internet, just like your home has an address. The IP address is used to communicate with a specific computer.

To a computer, the IP 127.0.0.1 is reserved so that a computer may communicate with itself.

The image is therefore funny because it plays off of the phrase "There's no place like home." If a computer wanted to say "There's no place like home." it would say "There's no place like 127.0.0.1.", because 127.0.0.1 is "home" to the computer.

So, whoever originally made this picture was saying "There's no place like home.", but in a more complex way.

Now that you get it, don't you think it's funny? Comment and tell me!! xD

1997 Nobel Peace Prize Winner

In 1997, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and their commissioner Jody Williams won the Nobel Peace Prize. They won it for working to outlaw landmines in over 130 countries. They did this by writing a treaty that 139 countries have signed. Those 139 countries have agreed to get rid of landmines in their nations and to enforce the treaty that the ICBL created.

The ICBL took action against anti-personnel landmines when Jody Williams took a trip to the Middle East and witnessed the horror of landmines. The issue was global because so many countries had activated landmines in them. The ICBL took action by writing an anti-landmine treaty that many countries have now signed. They got their message out using TV and magazine ads, as well as newspaper articles. The ICBL inspires me to take action about an issue that I see and to help end the issue. They didn't just say, "Oh well. There are landmines. That's bad." Instead they said, "What can we do about landmines?" and that's what inspires me.

 My questions
1) How many countries have signed the treaty? Answer: 139
2) Has the US signed the treaty? Answer: No :(
3) Do you now use other media channels other than what you used in 1997? Answer: Yes, we now use Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube.
4) Where is your headquarters? Answer: Geneva, Switzerland
5) How can I support the ICBL? Answer: You can join us on our website, www.icbl.org.

The ONE Campaign- The Campaign to Make Poverty History

Please take a minute to watch ONE’s new video and sign the petition to world leaders.

The reasons for the famine in the Africa are complicated, but here are a few facts:

30,000 children have passed in only 3 months. That's 10,000 kids dead in one month. That's also 333 kids every day. And worst of all, that's 4 kids dead every 15 minutes that pass by.

"Famine is not a natural catastrophe. Famine is the result of ignorance of a real natural catastrophe - drought." -ONE's spokespeople

Today, it’s a very sad thought that people are dying because they don't have enough food. Every one of those deceased children is part of a family. We can’t think of what it's like to starve to death, but some of us know what it’s like to lose someone we love.

"It will make a difference in putting pressure on our leaders to do more to help those in need, and live up to promises we already made to invest in the things proven to work – early warning systems, irrigation, and, of course, peace and security." -The ONE website, one.org

Here's what Bono (lead singer for U2) said in his speech to the UN: "I truly believe that when the history books are written, our age will be remembered for three things: the war on terror, the digital revolution, and what we did - or did not - do to put the fire out in Africa."

Also, here's what My Chemical Romance had to say about this in their song, Sing: "Sing it for the boys, sing it for the girls ... sing it for the world." They're basically saying this: Use your voice and save some of those 30,000 children dying every 3 months.

You can make a difference. Today.

Is bullying a problem?

Here are the results of my survey, along with the questions.

1. I have been the victim of bullying (teasing, name calling, hitting, threats, intimidation, and so on) at some time during this school year.

Agree- 75%
Disagree- 25%

2. I have bullied someone during this school year.

Agree- 12.5%
Disagree- 87.5%

3. I have witnessed someone else being bullied this school year.

Agree- 75%
Disagree- 25%

4. What do witnesses or bystanders usually do when they see someone being bullied?

(I won't put all the results here, but the overwhelming response was "nothing".)

5. Bullying is a problem in our school.

Agree- 100%
Disagree- 0%

Most people say they have been bullied. I don't know how it is for boys, but for girls (I've experienced it a lot myself), it's very hard. Who cares if you don't have on the right clothes or the right shoes? Who decided they were the "right" ones? Whose money is it that gets those "right" things? The bully continually perpetrates and puts down the victim.

Here's a quote I personally have plastered on everything to keep me feeling happy: "Dear popular people, hate on me, laugh at me, do whatever you want, but just remember one day I'll probably have a better life than you." Ask any adult if they were bullied, and most will say yes. And, they'll also say it WILL get better.

The majority of responses to question 4 was "nothing." Here's one question for you to think about: If you were being bullied, would you want someone to stand up for you or to ignore it?

Dr. Martin Luther King said, "Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter." Bullying matters. When you, the bystander, have a chance to stop the pain and suffering, and you ignore it, the person being bullied is worse off. Here's something else to think about: If you had the chance to get rid of bullying, would you ignore it? Or would you do the right thing and help to stop it?

Is bullying a problem in all schools? Everyone who took the survey said it was at our school. Is it a problem at yours? If you said no, there's a good chance you're missing all the ugly stuff. There's always going to be someone who is so insecure they need to make others feel more insecure to feel okay, or someone who has to have all the power, all the time. So what can you do about it?

You can not just ignore bullying, but report it. If it's severe enough, the bully will get sent to jail and he/she will learn their lesson. You can stand up to the bully. If they don't have anyone to give a show to, they won't do it. You can help that person you don't know that's being bullied. You can make their day with a simple compliment, and that simple compliment might just save their life.

You can help stop bullying.
