1997 Nobel Peace Prize Winner

In 1997, the International Campaign to Ban Landmines (ICBL) and their commissioner Jody Williams won the Nobel Peace Prize. They won it for working to outlaw landmines in over 130 countries. They did this by writing a treaty that 139 countries have signed. Those 139 countries have agreed to get rid of landmines in their nations and to enforce the treaty that the ICBL created.

The ICBL took action against anti-personnel landmines when Jody Williams took a trip to the Middle East and witnessed the horror of landmines. The issue was global because so many countries had activated landmines in them. The ICBL took action by writing an anti-landmine treaty that many countries have now signed. They got their message out using TV and magazine ads, as well as newspaper articles. The ICBL inspires me to take action about an issue that I see and to help end the issue. They didn't just say, "Oh well. There are landmines. That's bad." Instead they said, "What can we do about landmines?" and that's what inspires me.
